Mill City

  • On Old Mammoth Road, near the western end of the Mammoth Rock Trail and downstream from Mammoth City, lies the old town site of Mill City, one of three major mining camps from Mammoth's brief gold-rush days (1878-1881). A short trail leads from the turnout at the grave of one Mrs. Julia Townsend, who died in the winter of 1882 at the age of 34, shot "accidentally" by her husband. Heading up past several existing summer recreation cabins and a series of historical terraced cabin sites along the creek, the trail ends at the foundations and massive iron flywheel of the original 20-stamp mill.
