All of the Destinations

  • The Eastern Sierra is truly breathtaking, with dizzying peaks that touch the clouds and alpine lakes so clear, you can watch the trout swim to your lure. Unique geologic features, such as Crystal Crag and the Inyo Craters, are but a short hike from easily accessible trailheads, while cascading waterfalls such as Twin Lakes Falls are visible from a leisurely bike ride through the Lakes Basin. No matter how you want to get there, the Mammoth Lakes Trail System will deliver you to a spectacular array of destinations that will keep your camera’s memory card full and your eyes wider than the vistas they take in.

Destinations Update

  • Beginning on September 20th, 2023, Tree work in the Shady Rest area will result in a paved multi-use pathway closure immediately adjacent to Sawmill Cutoff Road, between the entrance to New Shady Rest Campground and Forest Road 3S292 (Pole Line Road). Pathway users will detour onto the West Side (Southbound) of Sawmill Cutoff Road to bypass the closure. It is estimated the tree work will be completed on September 28th, 2023 at which point the closure will be lifted. For more information on the closure and detour click HERE.

The Reds Meadow Road Construction project will begin on September 18th, 2023 and will result in both temporary and prolonged access disruptions to the road, campgrounds, and nearby trails. For more information click HERE.

The Inyo National Forest will be in Stage I Fire Restrictions starting this Friday, August 4 to protect natural resources and provide for public safety. Campfires are not allowed outside of developed campgrounds. For More information click HERE.

The U.S. Forest Service - Inyo National Forest has released a proposed action for Over-Snow Vehicle (OSV) use, which is now available for public comment. For More information on the project, upcoming public meetings, and to comment on the proposed action, click HERE.

Mammoth Lakes Town Council is very interested in hearing from you, the recreation users, regarding any thoughts you may have on the subpart C proposed action, with a focus on the areas immediately adjacent to the Town of Mammoth Lakes. If you have questions, comments, or want to relay your feelings, please reach out to Outdoor Recreation Manager, Lawson Reif.

Additionally, we invite you to join the Mammoth Trails Committee on Thursday, October 12 at 3pm in Suite Z to review and discuss the proposed action. For more information on the Mammoth Trails Committee visit the Mammoth Lakes Recreation governance page or email [email protected]
